Milestones in the development of IMS and related technologies.

Early Events

1966

IBM works with North American Rockwell and Caterpillar Tractor to create the Information Control System (ICS) and Data Language/I (DL/I), a system designed to inventory the large bills of material for the Saturn V moon rocket and the Apollo space vehicle.

1968

  • The first "IMS READY" message appears on an IBM 2740 terminal in Downey, California.

1969 - 1970

  • IBM renames ICS "Information Management System," or IMS, and ships IMS/360 V1 – the industry’s first hierarchical database management system.

1971

  • IMS/360 Version 2 ships. Highlights include Multiple Systems Coupling (MSC) for distributed computing, Intersystem Communication (ISC), Logging, two-phase commit, DB Recovery Control (DBRC), Data Sharing and other innovations.

1974 - 1984

  • IMS/VS Version 1 ships with new releases following in 1975 through 1984. Features include Virtual Region Control, Secondary Indexing, VSAM, VTAM, MVS, GSAM, SMP Support, OSAM Logging, RACF, DBRC, Online Image Copy, DEDB Data Sharing, Cross Memory Services and Support, DASD Log, Online Change, and MFS Buffers.

1986

  • IBM ships IMS/VS Version 2 with Extended Recovery Facility for backup across systems and non-disruptive introduction of new operating systems and Data Communications Virtual Storage Constraint Relief to accommodate rapid growth.

The Middle Years

1989

  • IMS/ESA Version 3 introduces the Database Control Facility, Database Virtual Storage Constraint Relief, and Fast Path High Speed Sequential Processing.

1991

  • DataPropagator, which propagates data between IMS and DB2, is born.

1993

  • IBM releases IMS/ESA Version 4 with Concurrent Image Copy, Extended Terminal Option, and the Logic Unit 6.2/Advance Program to Program Communication (APPC) programming interface standard.

1995

  • IBM releases IMS/ESA Version 5. with Open Transaction Manager Access, Object-Oriented Technology, Sysplex Data Sharing and Remote Site Recovery

1997

  • IMS/ESA Version 6 ships with shared queues, dynamic routing, distributed synchpoint and other enhancements, including Open Database Access, Object Connector, and IMS Client for Java. IBM connects IMS data to the Web with IMS Web and provides enhanced communication linkages between IMS and remote workstations with IMS TCP/IP OTMA Connection.

Recent Developments

2000

  • IBM releases IMS Version 7, with High Availability Large Database (HALDB) support, XML, Java application support and Java database access, and the IMS Connect and Connector for Java.
  • IBM announces the start of a new business, IMS Tools for z/OS.

2002

  • IBM releases IMS Version 8, with distributed single point of operations control (SPOC) through IMS Connect, Coordinated Online Change, and Sysplex Terminal management.

2004

  • IBM releases IMS 9, with HALDB Online Reorg support, XML Database support, and the IntegratedConnect function

2007

  • IBM releases IMS 10, with enhanced XML and Web services capabilities.

2008

  • IBM announces IMS 11, with open distributed database access, enhanced connectivity for SOA, and Fast Path 64-bit buffer management
  • The portfolio of IMS Tools for z/OS, enhanced every year since inception in 2000, now numbers more than 40 Tools that complement IMS.
